Homosexuals in Iraq are being arrested and killed by local militia – reported Human Rights Watch (HRW). The organized campaign has extended from Baghdad to several other cities and towns, where the dead bodies of gay people have been got, dumped in garbage. Some dead bodies were hanged as warnings on the roads. The movement has been mainly blamed on Shiite extremists because they think targeted behavior was un-Islamic.

The violence was exposed when the bodies of some men were first found in a Shia district, Baghdad earlier 2009 with the Arabic sentence for pervert written on the chests. Other bodies found in Sadr City, Najaf, Kirkuk, and Basra. HRW says the killings number to so-called social cleansing. It has threat the occurrence poses a new warning to Iraqi security as proving administration are unable to take steps to stop the killings.
